Authorities say a masked man shot the store clerk and assaulted a customer before leaving.

SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Harnett County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation after a robbery turned deadly Saturday night.

A gas station employee was shot and killed during an armed robbery in Harnett County, the sheriff's office confirms.

Deputies found 50-year-old Alfredo Escalona Mares dead inside the Value Mart on Broadway Road and Highway 87 near Sanford after responding to a call around 11:15 p.m.

According to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office, a masked man entered the store armed with a weapon, demanded money from Mares, and shot him during the robbery. The suspect also assaulted a customer before leaving the scene.

The customer, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect has not been arrested.

Many other customers who knew Mares told ABC11 the crime is shocking.

"He's just a good guy, he's friendly, he tried to help you anyway he can. You need something out of the cooler, he would go in and work you, and help you out, he's just an overall friendly guy," said Andy McLean.
