RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Light showers are expected at times through this evening. Lows will drop into the 60s tonight.

Monday is a First Alert Day for the risk of flooding. Impacts start in the morning as heavy rain will impact the morning commute. Additionally, expect scattered showers and storms throughout the day. Rain will be heavy at times, leading to travel impacts and delays. Flooding will be a concern in areas of poor drainage.

While these showers will be beneficial along the coast where there is currently a moderate drought, any downpour can lead to ponding on streets and highways, as well as flooding in any low-lying or poor drainage areas where multiple rounds of thunderstorms occur.

These periods of heavy rain can also lead to rises in streams and rivers across the region.

By Tuesday, deep moisture looks to fall through the afternoon, suggesting that the heaviest rain for the Triangle should be early in the morning, though there can still be a few leftover showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday evening. Some locally gusty thunderstorms are possible, particularly along the coast. From today through Tuesday evening, we can expect rain totals to be generally 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts where the heaviest thunderstorms occur.

Wednesday, we will have to deal with additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms as that large area of low pressure moves through our region. By Thursday, most showers around should be limited to eastern portions of the region, and we can expect a mainly dry day with heat building in.

This dry break doesn't look to last long, however, as our attention will then turn to a cold front that looks to approach the area next weekend. Ahead of that front, it will be very warm with highs in the low 90s on Friday. A chance of showers returns for Saturday as that front moves into the state.

Happy Mother's Day!
